‘Goblin Market’ chamber musical set for Sept. 21 at Eureka College

Eureka College voice instructor Gina Wright to star

“Goblin Market,” a chamber musical based on the 1859 Christina Rossetti poem of the same title, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in Becker Auditorium in the Cerf Center at Eureka College. A reception will follow.

The free performance will star Gina Wright, who teaches voice at Eureka College and Bradley University, and Kitty Karn, an assistant professor of voice and musical theater at Western Illinois University. Music will be by Greg Martin, piano, and Lynn Thompson, synthesizer.

The work explores the relationship between sisters Laura, played by Karn, and Lizzie, played by Wright, after Laura eats the delicious but dangerous fruit sold by goblin men at a local market. Critics have viewed the poem as an expression of Rossetti’s feminist views about Victorian marriage and social constraints on women in the 1800s.

Music for the production is by Polly Pen, with lyrics by Pen, Rossetti and Peggy Harmon. Additional lyrics are by Max Knight and John Gav, and additional music is by Antonio Lotti and Johannes Brahms.
