The Rev. Dennis Landon, who is the president of the Higher Education and Leadership Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), will be the keynote speaker at Eureka College’s 153rd Founders’ Day convocation at 4 p.m. Feb. 6 in the Cerf Center. Landon’s presentation titled “The View From the Balcony” will discuss the college’s heritage and the importance of learning to ask questions.
Landon also will present Eureka College music professor Jan Wanack of Peoria with the 2007 T.A. Abbott Award for Faculty Excellence given by the Board of Directors of the Higher Education and Leadership Ministries. The award is the most prestigious recognition given by the church to members of the faculties of the 14 colleges and universities affiliated with the church. Wanack, who has taught at Eureka College for 32 years, will retire this spring.
In addition, recipients of grants from the Eureka College Fund for the Advancement of Excellence in Learning, Service and Leadership will be announced. Faculty and staff were invited last fall to submit grant proposals for projects that improve programs and services for students. The fund was established by Eureka College President J. David Arnold last year.
Also, Eureka College First-year and Upper-class Scholars will be recognized. The students all have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.75 after completing at least 15 semester hours of coursework for First-year Scholars and at least 30 semester hours of coursework for Upper-class Scholars.
Eureka College was incorporated on Feb. 6, 1855, by an act of the Illinois Legislature. The founding date coincides with the birth date of the college’s most famous alumnus, Ronald Reagan, who graduated in 1932. In recognition of both the founding date and Reagan’s birth date, the college traditionally serves birthday cake at the reception following the convocation.
