Eureka College honorary alumnae

Retiring employees honored

Two retiring Eureka College employees will be named honorary alumnae at the college’s annual alumni dinner May 17. Ann Shoemaker and Jan Wanack will be honored for their “years of loyalty and devotion to Eureka College” at 5 p.m. in the Cerf Center, said alumni relations director LeaAnne Schmidgall.

The public is welcome to attend. Tickets are $25 and may be reserved by calling the development and alumni office at (309) 467-6317.

Shoemaker of Eureka will retire in June after 20 years as administrative assistant for the college’s Ronald W. Reagan Leadership Program. Before that, she was the administrative assistant in the dean’s office for three years. Besides her work role, Shoemaker participated in the Eureka College Community Chorale and assisted with designing and constructing costumes for college theater productions. She was the inaugural recipient of the Eureka College Staff Recognition Award in 1998. She also is a member of the Eureka College Women’s Board, which raises funds for campus improvements. College officials recently announced the establishment of the Ann Shoemaker Mentorship Fund, which will help fund Reagan Fellows’ mentorship trips.

Wanack of Peoria will retire in May after more than 30 years of teaching music at Eureka College. Since joining the Eureka College faculty in 1976, her teaching responsibilities have included applied voice, music history, music literature and diction. She also was coordinator of the college’s Senior Seminar Program. Last year, Wanack received the T.A. Abbott Award for Faculty Excellence from the Board of Directors of Higher Education and Leadership Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). In 2006, she received Eureka College’s Helen Cleaver Distinguished Teaching Award for excellence, creativity and innovation in teaching, and in 1992 she received the Sears Roebuck Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching and Campus Leadership.
