Eureka College announces Durward V. Sandifer Fellows

Eureka College has announced recipients of its Durward V. Sandifer Fellowship.  The students, who just ended their sophomore year at the college, are:

Erin Bundy – elementary education major from Chillicothe;

Mary Garbett –  biology and chemistry double major enrolled in the pre-veterinary program from Georgetowne, Ohio;

Korte Knoblauch – biology and chemistry double major from Lowpoint;

Jason List – biology major from Mason City;

Laura Punke – secondary education major in history from Eureka;

Kimberlee Sandall – communication major from Pekin;

William Smalley – philosophy and religion major from Coon Rapids, Minn.;

Andrew Taylor – political science and history double major from Spring Valley;

Ashley Urish – biology major from Manito;

Ashley Warchol – psychology and business administration double major from Coulterville;

Melissa Wessels – art and biology double major from Waterman;

Alyssa Wetterauer – chemistry major from Washington;

Elizabeth Wilson – elementary education major from Peoria.

The students qualified for the Sandifer Fellowship by completing their first four semesters at the college with a minimum 3.5 grade point average, a proven track record in community service, and demonstrated leadership on Eureka’s campus, according to program director Brian Sajko.

 “The Sandifer Fellows, in addition to the scholarships they currently hold, will be awarded the opportunity to perform a funded six- to eight-week mentorship, anywhere in the world, with a mentor of their choice,” Sajko said.

Eureka College initiated the program in fall 2004 when it informed incoming freshmen of the opportunity.  The program extends the advantages presented by mentorships to a wider group of students.  Ronald Reagan Fellows at the college are recipients of similar mentorships.

The Sandifer Fellowship is named in honor of Durward V. Sandifer, a 1924 graduate of the college who played a major role with the U.S. State Department in the creation of the United Nations.  Sandifer is credited with having provided most of the wording for the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights.
