Eureka College names alumni award Recipents

Eureka College presented its annual alumni awards at a dinner held April 25 during alumni weekend.

Eureka College sociology professor William Staudenmeier Jr. of Eureka was named an honorary alumnus for “exemplifying the values of Eureka College and for his extraordinary service to the college and its alumni board of directors,” said Alumni Relations Director Shellie Schwanke. Staudenmeier has taught at the college for 22 years and serves as a faculty representative to the alumni board.

Three alumni received Outstanding Young Alumni Awards for alumni who have graduated within the past 15 years and who have achieved excellence in their professions and service to their communities and alma mater. Recipients and the years they graduated are Sarah Lunt Ewart of Seattle, 1996; Donna Presley Happach of Columbia, S.C., 1995; and Nathan Hutchings of Shreveport, 1996.

Ewart owns a consulting firm, working primarily in the area of global health with an emphasis on supporting research and development of new products for neglected diseases. Happach is executive director of ParentingPartners, which provides home-based preservation and therapeutic services to families. Hutchings is president and COO of Bear Creek Services, an oil and gas consulting and servicing company.

Two alumni received Alumni Awards of Merit for lifetime excellence in their professions, service to their communities and alma mater and for how their lives exemplify the benefits of a liberal arts education. Recipients are Darrell Eyman of Iowa City, 1959, and Elizabeth Mitchell of St. Paul, Ind., 1935. Eyman was a chemistry professor at the University of Iowa. Mitchell taught piano and organ and was a music director at her church.

Keith Davis of Peoria received the Teacher of the Year Award from the college’s teacher education program. Davis, who graduated in 2007, is a social studies teacher at Bloomington Academy, Bloomington.
