Art created from found objects to be exhibited at Eureka College

february 20 - march 20 - burgess hall art gallery

Artworks assembled with everyday objects found by Normal artist Carol Hahn will be displayed Feb. 20-March 20 in Burgess Hall Art Gallery at Eureka College. Hahn’s exhibit titled “de / cadence” will include pieces that she made from items she discovered on the ground, in the trash, in her garden and other places.

“My materials come from the casual products of our lives – all the stuff that passes through our hands,” Hahn said. “My objects are transient, precarious and fragile. These little bits of life, fragments which by themselves seem insignificant, when assembled, strung together and connected, can begin to be beautiful.”

Simple objects like the ones used in her works can transcend the idea of what is important and remind viewers that life matters, Hahn said.  “In its most insignificant, fragile moments, life still is precious,” she said.

Hahn received a bachelor’s degree from Washington University, St. Louis, and a master’s degree from Rutgers University. She teaches drawing and sculpture at Heartland Community College, Normal.

The Eureka College art gallery is located on the third floor of Burgess Memorial Hall, 300 E. College Ave. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment by calling (309) 467-6866.

Carol Hahn’s sculpture uses a gourd, pine cone, root and rubber band that are not glued or fastened, but are held together by weight, shape and balance. “Together they form a new object through the interplay of surface, form, texture and color,” Hahn said. “It is a visual poem that evokes the strangeness of the familiar and the fragility of substance.”
