Oklahoma, Oregon residents receive ministry fellowships to attend Eureka College
Full-Tuition, Four-Year Scholarships Awarded
Lindsay Rittgers of Midwest City, Okla., and Douglas Collins of Albany, Ore., have received Ministry Fellowships to attend Eureka College this fall. The full-tuition, four-year scholarships are based on academic achievement, leadership and a desire to enter the ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Eureka is among 17 colleges and universities affiliated with the Christian Church. The fellowship includes two mentorships with ministries related to the Christian Church. The program pays for the costs associated with the mentorships.
Rittgers is a daughter of Tamara Winters of Midwest City and Brian Rittgers of Oklahoma City. She is a 2009 graduate of Midwest City High School, where she was on the honor roll, played violin in the orchestra and was a member of the color guard. The Girl Scout is a junior deacon and member of the youth group at Midwest Boulevard Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Midwest City. She is a member of the council that plans events for Disciples of Christ youths in an approximately 170-church region, and last year she attended a Christian Church-sponsored International Affairs Seminar in New York City and Washington, D.C., to learn about the intersection of politics and Christian action. The church camp counselor also assists with a Christmas for Others program for more than 70 underprivileged families and has participated in the CROP Hunger Walk for 10 years.
Rittgers will major in philosophy and religion and participate on the dance team and in religion-related activities at Eureka College. She plans to become a youth pastor.
Collins is a son of Pat and Janis Collins. He is a 2009 graduate of West Albany High School, where he participated in theatrical productions and musical activities, including playing piano in the jazz band and clarinet in the symphonic band. He was the 2007 “Honored Member” for exceptional participation and leadership at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Albany, where he is a member of the youth group, the visual aid technician and founder of the “Green Team” to establish and promote environmentally friendly practices. He is a member of the council that plans events for Disciples of Christ youths in an approximately 40-church region.
Collins plans to major in sociology and psychology and participate in musical and religion-related activities at Eureka College.
“Eureka College is pleased to welcome Lindsay and Doug to this ministry program,” said Eureka College Chaplain Bruce Fowlkes. “They have made leadership and service to the church their personal goals, and they will be wonderful additions to the Eureka College campus and the Eureka community.”
Eureka College was chartered in 1855 by anti-slavery activists affiliated with the Christian Church. It offers bachelor’s degrees in the sciences, mathematics, business administration, social sciences, fine and performing arts, humanities and education. For more information>
