Students May Submit Original Poems for Eureka College Young Poets’ Awards

Top three submissions win cash, Eureka College scholarships

Illinois students are invited to enter Eureka College’s poetry contest titled Visionaries in Literature: Young Poets’ Awards.  High school sophomores, juniors and seniors and junior college students may enter one original piece of poetry to win cash awards and scholarships to Eureka College.

The top three entries will be published in the ELM literary journal. Submission deadline is Jan. 31. Guidelines are at eurekacollegeyoungpoetsaward.blogspot.com.

The Eureka College chapter of Sigma Tau Delta international English honor society received a $500 grant from the Sigma Tau Delta national office to support the competition, which will be held in conjunction with the Eureka College English Department’s Literary Festival Feb. 24-25. Students who submit poems may attend the literary festival free of charge.

The grant money will be used in part for publicity for the poetry competition, award certificates and a reception for the winners.

The grant application was written by Jessica Doble of Deer Creek, who is president of the Eureka chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, and Tonya Franz of Metamora, who is chapter secretary and historian.  Both women are seniors. Doble is majoring in English. Franz is majoring in secondary education with teacher certification in English.
