Civil War Commemorative Events To Be Held at Eureka College April 15, 16

150th anniversary of the us civil war

A free, two-day event to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War will take place at Eureka College
April 15 and 16. The public and school groups are welcome to attend. For more information, contact history professor Junius Rodriguez at jrodrig@eureka.edu or (309) 467-6416.

The event will include a re-enactment of an encampment of the 108th Illinois Infantry. The 108th  was a medical regiment that included surgeon Richard Conover of Eureka. An exhibit of medical practices and supplies will be part of the re-enactment. A free breakfast of soldiers’ staples – hardtack and coffee – will be offered at 8 a.m. April 16.

The event also will include a ceremony memorializing members of Company G of the 17th Illinois Infantry. The group included Eureka College students and faculty who had gathered at the Recruiting Elm on campus to sign up for military service. A wreath-laying ceremony at the site of the tree will kick-off activities at 9 a.m. April 15.

Other activities will include a performance by the Central Illinois Civil War Dance Society Performers 11 a.m. Saturday in the Cerf Center, a presentation on the Recruiting Elm and the importance of commemorating historical events by Eureka College alumnus and professor at Georgia State University Brian Ingrassia, a Civil War exhibit in Melick Library, a continuously running documentary about the war in the Cerf Center, living history presentations by Eureka College history and theater students, and music of the era.
