Dr. James Owens
Former Caterpillar Chairman and CEO James Owens is the first Executive in Residence at Eureka College. The program will provide students with first-hand insights into executive corporate leadership and the development of business strategies that go beyond texts and other written materials assigned in business courses.
This fall, Owens will present a lecture and lead small-group discussions on topics related to corporate management and economic policies. The lecture will be open to the public. Owens also will visit classes to discuss career development opportunities.
"I look forward to visiting Eureka College next fall and sharing some of my experiences to help prepare students for future responsibilities in the global economy," Owens said.
Eureka College Provost and Dean of the College Philip Acree Cavalier said, "As an academic and a former CEO of a major corporation, Dr. Owens will offer Eureka students unique insights into corporate management and leadership that will broadly enrich their educations.”
Eureka College President J. David Arnold added that the appointment of the college’s first Executive in Residence is “an important step in adding even more depth to our academic offerings.”
"Students in our business administration, accounting and economics classes will undoubtedly benefit from the opportunity to interact with Dr. Owens,” said Junius Rodriguez, chairman of the Social Science and Business Division. “His real-world experience will provide an
immediacy and a richness that is invaluable to students who seek careers in business and industry."
Owens joined Caterpillar as a corporate economist in 1972. He was chairman and chief executive officer from 2004 until his retirement in 2010.
Owens holds a doctorate in economics from North Carolina State University, where he established the Owens Distinguished Professorship in Supply Chain Management and the James W. Owens Graduate Economics Fund to provide stipend support for doctoral economics students. He is a member of the university’s board of trustees and was named the university’s College of Management “Person of the Year” in 2009.
