Jessica Brown has been named the new head volleyball coach at Eureka College effective July 1, Director of Athletics Steve Thompson announced Monday. Brown, a 2012 Western Michigan University graduate, will join Eureka College as the 12th coach in school history.
“We are excited to have Jess take the lead of our volleyball program,” Thompson said. “Jess has experienced success at every level of volleyball, both as a player and coach. Throughout the interview process, we were most impressed with her work ethic both as a player and a coach. I am confident in the future of Eureka College volleyball.”
As a player Brown excelled both on the court and in the classroom. At Western Michigan she was a three-time first-team All-MAC selection and two-time Academic All-Mac selection. She is second all-time in kills with 1,532, eighth all time in blocks with 349 and third all-time in points with 1,751.
After winning more than 90 games as a student-athlete Brown began a successful coaching career. After graduation she joined the Western Michigan staff as an assistant coach and has been active on the club scene coaching with the Dead Frog FaR Out Volleyball Club out of Kalamazoo. Brown has spent five seasons working with the DFFO club coaching a variety of teams including a 15- and 17/18-year-old national team. Since Brown joined the DFFO organization in 2010, more than 50 players have continued their careers at the collegiate level.
“I am very excited to begin a new era of Eureka College volleyball,” Brown said. “Coach Michelle Reef did a tremendous job with the program over the last few years, and with the support of the administration I believe the volleyball program can be highly successful in the classroom and on the court.”
As many as seven letter winners will return for Brown, along with at least four newcomers. The 2014 season is scheduled to begin at Monmouth Aug. 30.
