Living on Campus

is it required?

Eureka College requires that all full time students attending Eureka College live in the residence halls on campus unless approval is granted by the Director of Residence Life or the Dean of Student Programs and Services. Students who are granted exemptions from living on campus meet one or more of the following criteria:

1) commute from a parent's home (within a 50-mile radius)

2) pursuing a second bachelor's degree

3) are entering their 5th year of college with senior status

4) over 23 years of age

5) married

6) have lived independently for over a year

7) hold a full time internship or student teaching position outside of Eureka

Students who feel they qualify to live off campus may apply for "commuter" status by filling out the
off campus housing request form and returning it to the SPS Office in the Cerf Center.

Eureka Dorm Life

What can I expect?

- What is provided in my room/in the hall?

All residence halls, except Gunzenhauser and Jones, are air conditioned buildings. They are all equipped with cable, internet access (2 connections in double rooms), and a phone jack for local phone service. Students MUST bring their own phone to hook up in their room for on campus and local phone calls. Long distance calls must be made with a calling card or cell phone.

Each room comes with a bed frame, mattress, desk, chair, small dresser, closet, and blinds. Each floor has a lounge and laundry facilities are located several places throughout campus. Soda and/or vending machines are also located in several of the residence halls. For students wishing to bring a bike, there are several outdoor bike racks.

- What is a loft?

A loft is a platform that lifts your bed up off of the floor in order to provide more space in your room.  Lofts vary in construction and height.  Students who want a loft have the option of buying or building their own.  Loft plans can be found in the SPS Office in the Cerf Center.  Also, Eureka College rents lofts to students for a $100 fee.  All of the proceeds go into student programming on campus.  Students interested in renting a loft must turn in a Loft Agreement Form and their $100 payment by the end of July for the fall semester.  Loft Agreement Forms are given out when students come to Jump Start sessions over the summer (or through email for returning students).

- Is storage available?

Eureka College does not have storage space available to students.  Students wishing to store belongings during the year or over the summer are encouraged to call the city storage facility in Eureka (J&M Storage).  The furniture that comes in a student’s room MUST stay in that room all year.  In some areas, it is permitted for students to store their bed frame for a $25 storage fee, if they choose to do so.

- Can I decorate my room?

Students are encouraged to decorage individual rooms to their liking. However, wallpaper and contact paper should not be used. Students should also refrain from using nails and screws which cause lasting damage to the walls.

- What is an RA?

Resident Advisors (RA's) are student members of the Residence Life Staff who live on the floors in the residence halls. Nearly every floor on campus has an RA. This person is a student's initial contact whenever there are concerns or questions. The RA is also responsible for building community, planning programs, explaining and enforcing policies, mediating roommate conflicts, handling concerns, and being a friend or big "brother/sister" to the residents on their floor.

- Residence Hall policies I need to be aware of are....

- All EC residence halls are non-smoking. Those wishing to smoke must do so outside. Smoking receptacles are located near most halls on campus.

- Students are not allowed to burn candles or incense in their rooms.

- Guests and friends of students are welcome on campus at any time. Students wishing to have a guest over must have the consent of their roommate. Students wishing to have a guest stay for more than three consecutive nights must have prior approval from Residence Life.

- Eureka College upholds "quiet hours" on every residence hall floor on campus from 11:00 PM until 7:00 AM. During this time, residents must keep music and all other noise to a minimum. "Courtesy hours" exist 24 hours a day. Therefore, residents must be respectful towards their neighbors, in regards to noise, at all times.

- There are no pets permitted in the residence halls with the exception of fish.

- More information on residential policies may be accessed through the Eureka College Student Handbook on our EC Intranet site.

Picking a roommate

what you need to know

All freshmen students have roommates. When space is available, upperclass students may request a single room, although it cannot be guaranteed. Students should specify on their housing contract if they are interested in paying the additional cost to have their own room (additional $1,030/semester).

Room assignments and roommate assignments are made based on the date that the following are received::

1) housing contract

2) refundable housing deposit ($150)

3) roommate survey

Students may request to have a specific roommate. This request will be honored as long as both students specify on their contract that they are interested in living together. Formal notice of all room and roommate assignments will be mailed out in mid-July. Eureka College attempts to respond to each and every request.

Students interested in switching roommates must talk with their RA and eventually the Director of Residence Life. No room changes will be granted during the first two weeks of the academic year.

Meal Plan

what are my options?

All full time residential students are required to be on the college’s meal plan.  Through the meal plan, students may eat up to 3 meals each day in the Commons.

Commons -

Breakfast served 7am – 9am

Lunch served 10:45am – 12:45pm

Dinner served from 5pm – 6:30pm

If a student cannot make it to the Commons for lunch or dinner, they may eat a “meal plan option” in the Burgoo.

Burgoo -

Lunch from 12:45pm – 3:00pm

Dinner from 7pm – 9pm

Students use their student ID to receive meals.  Each student starts out the year with $10 in “devil dollars” that may be used in the Burgoo for meals other than the meal plan options.  Students may add money to this at any time.
