Unrehearsed Shakespeare Workshop

is the sword mightier than the pen?

Of course not. We all know the weight words carry. Especially when they are crafted by the master - Mr. Shakespeare. So we've combined these two mighty entities...

All of the verse. All of the battles. None of the rehearsal.

May 2009, in conjunction with the Central Illinois Stage Combat Workshop, we will be presenting an Unrehearsed Shakespeare Workshop. These two workshops will be run concurrently - students can enroll in either one - and participate in both. The weeklong Unrehearsed Shakespeare Workshop will culminate with students presenting a full length Shakespearean play.

Dr. Bill Kincaid

Get to know

A Master thespian

Bill Kincaid is Associate Professor and Head of Acting in the Western Illinois University Department of Theatre and Dance. Bill came to WIU from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he was Head of Performance in the department of theatre for five years. Prior to that, he taught at the University of California, Davis, and the Williamstown Theatre Festival Apprentice Workshop. Recently Bill has appeared in the New England Shakespeare Festival's productions of Romeo and Juliet (as Friar Lawrence) and The Taming of the Shrew (as Baptista), and in Chicago as Kent in Vitalist Theatre's King Lear.  He has directed at the Brown County Playhouse in Indiana, New York's Cortland Repertory Theatre, Seacoast Repertory Theatre in New Hampshire, Theatre Works of Sarasota Florida, and McLeod Summer Playhouse in Illinois.

Bill was trained as a classical pianist in his youth, and has written several children's musicals, commissioned and produced by the Williamstown Theatre Festival and Florida Studio Theatre.  Two years ago he directed one of them (The Beginning of Armadillos) for Western Illinois University's Regional Touring Theatre.  He has a particular interest in original performance practice of Elizabethan scripts, and his studies in that area led to him to found Macomb’s “Bard in the Barn” project.  There, with the support of the Macomb Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and grants from the Performing Arts Society and the University Research Council, he has produced Romeo and Juliet, Richard II, Twelfth Night, Comedy of Errors, The Winter’s Tale and Julius Caesar.  At WIU, Bill played Benjamin Franklin in 1776, directed productions of Fuddy Meers and Henry IV, Part One and Bach at Leipzig and The Visit.

Recently he received a Faculty Directing Fellowship from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, and was honored by the National Partners of American Theatre with a Classical Acting Coach Award.  His students have gone on to appear on the Broadway stage, regional theatre and major motion pictures, and have won several awards including the Irene Ryan Scholarship Acting Award.  Bill is actively involved in regional leadership of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, serving frequently as a production respondent and also as the Illinois State Chair.
