Computers around campus

Locations and access

Residence Halls

All dormitory rooms are wired for high-speed access to the campus network and to the Internet. Students are encouraged to bring their own computers. The business-class computers work best with the network. Eureka College provides the (wired) network connectivity and support. We also provide anti-virus software for all computers connected to the network, on request. Students are responsible for any other hardware or software issues with their own computers.

Computer Labs

There are six computer labs on the Eureka College campus to serve student needs.  The student-to-computer ratio is about 7 (students) to 1 (computer).  Students can easily find an available computer in one of these labs.  Classes are held in some labs. Lab Assistants are available in the Computer Study Center in the Melick Library to help students.  Users may contact the Help Desk with any computer-related issues.

  • Vennum - Binkley PC Lab has 20 computers plus one station for the instructor.  This lab may be used for classes.  The PC Lab is available to students during normal business hours when scheduled classes are not using it.

  • Vennum - Binkley Programmers Lab has 12 computers plus one station for the instructor.  This lab is reserved for computer science classes and computer training sessions.  It is open to all students when no other classes are scheduled.

  • The Computer Study Center located in the basement of Melick Library has 16 computers.  Classes are not held in this lab. The Computer Study Center is open during normal library hours including evening and weekend hours. Lab assistants are also available for help.

  • The Burgess Computer Lab has 10 computers.  This lab is available for students during normal business hours.

  • The Ben Major Computer Lab has 6 computers and a printer/copier.  It is housed in the middle of student residence halls and is available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Wireless access is also available within the building.

  • The Pritchard Lab has 5 computers.  This lab is open by appointment only.

Each of these computer labs has a wide variety of software available to students and other users. The commonly used application software is available in each lab, with some software reserved for specific majors may be installed in one designated lab. Printing is available via the network in each lab. The high-speed black and white as well as color printing is available in selected areas on campus. Each student gets a free printing quota for black and white printing.

Instructional Support

All classrooms are wired for connecting to the campus network. Majority of classrooms are equipped with a computer and audio visual equipment for the instructor. A 24-station “smart computer lab” with advanced computer technologies, is available for instructional use. In addition, two other computer labs are available for “hands-on” classroom activities. Portable audio visual equipment is also available on request.

Wireless Connectivity

The wireless access to the Internet is available in limited areas on campus. The current areas include the Melick Library, the Cerf Center, and the Ben Major Hall.

SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS

In addition to the general productivity software, Eureka College uses some software applications designed for specific purposes. The services available over the Internet require user authentication. All users are responsible for any activity associated with the login accounts assigned to them. Any authentication-related issues or network misuses may be reported to computer services.
