Photo Gallery: Eureka College Spring Break SLAM Trip
In March 2018, the Eureka College Service Learning and Mission (SLAM) Trip collaborated with Community Collaborations International to perform disaster relief work in the Beaumont, Texas area devastated by Hurricane Harvey.
Eureka College, through the help of our generous donors, enabled eight students and Eureka College Chaplain Bruce Fowlkes to spend the week removing yard debris, tearing out molding walls and repairing rotting floors. We met homeowners who had to swim through rapidly rising storm surge to a neighbor’s home to wake them up. Luckily a rescue helicopter saw them frantically waving a towel, leading to their rescue. Funding for the annual SLAM trip, provided by donors and churches, lessens the overall cost for participants, giving the opportunity for service to all students of the college community, including those who could not afford to participate.
Many local community organizations need help meeting the needs of thousands who still cannot return to their homes. Since September, 13,000 volunteers have served just through CCI, including college and university groups from all over the US.
