Eureka College Student Ronnie Valverde to Study Abroad in Japan
Congratulations to Ronnie Valverde, a junior majoring in Communications and Media Studies, who will be embarking on a study abroad experience in Japan from March 24 through August.
Ronnie’s journey to Japan is part of a self-designed minor in Japanese Cultural Studies, fulfilling a long-held dream of studying in another country. Since high school, he has aspired to immerse himself in a new culture, with Japan as his top choice.
During his time abroad, Ronnie will reside in Machida, Tokyo, a city just over an hour from the renowned Shibuya City by train. He will study at J.F. Oberlin University, a medium-sized Christian institution known for its support of international students, ensuring a smooth transition. His coursework will focus on Japanese language and culture, including an in-depth exploration of Kabuki theatre.
Additionally, one of his classes will involve community engagement and research, allowing him to contribute to the local area. Beyond academics, Ronnie’s experience will foster independence, adaptability, integrity, and financial responsibility—all valuable qualities for his future career. Managing his funds and navigating life in a vastly different cultural environment will further strengthen his problem-solving and cross-cultural communication skills, setting him apart in the professional world.
Reflecting on Japanese culture, Ronnie shared: "The culture is about as different as you can get—language, beliefs, values—it’s all somewhat separated from our own, if not entirely. People are very friendly, though after some time, you may notice that they aren’t quite as personable right away. During my last stay, I asked a friend what the difference was between his American and Japanese friends. He told me he preferred time with his American friends because we are more open and personable." Ronnie is excited to embrace this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, immerse himself in the atmosphere, and gain invaluable experiences. "This is such an accomplishment for me—a real dream come true—and I can't thank Eureka enough for helping me see it through," said Valverde.
We wish him the best on this incredible journey!
