Student Spotlight: Matthew Swan
We are thrilled to shine the Student Spotlight on Matthew Swan, a freshman Communication & Media Studies and Sports Management double major!
Matthew chose to study at Eureka College for Eureka’s amazing broadcasting program. As a freshman, Matthew is still exploring career options for his degrees. He has a few plans in mind, including attending graduate school, pursuing a job in broadcasting, or securing an internship with a minor league baseball team in broadcasting.
Matthew is a fellow in the Ronald W. Reagan Leadership Program and a recipient of the Ronald Reagan Scholarship. In addition to being a Reagan Fellow, he works closely with John Malone, covers sports games for ECTV and EC 103.1, serves as an intern for Eureka College’s social media team, and recently co-founded a Bible Study Club with a friend!
Matthew’s happiest moment at Eureka was traveling to Chicago with the Reagan Fellows, where they visited an art museum and had free time to explore the city. He is also looking forward to an upcoming trip to Sweden with the Reagan Fellows this summer.
One of his most memorable classes so far has been TV Practicum with John Malone, where he learned to operate cameras, edit videos, and even appear on TV for sports game coverage. His favorite place on campus is the Cerf Center, as he appreciates its blend of Eureka’s historical charm with modern updates. He describes it as having a "home away from home" atmosphere.
Matthew is thoroughly enjoying his time in the EC community, sharing:
"The campus is small, and the professors are nice. Students aren’t just seen as a number—there’s a real sense of community here."
