Dr. John Rakes
Professor of Practice in Music and Director of Choral Activities
Research Interests
My primary research focuses on discovering, editing, and performing neglected music of the past. In particular my research has focused on the sacred compositions of the Baroque Italian master, Antonio Caldara who lived from ca. 1671-1736. Caldara brought the Italian High-Baroque style to Vienna and influenced the Viennese Classical style. My critical edition of Caldara’s Missa Gratiarum in C is the first critical edition of a solemn mass by this influential composer. My other research interests include conducting pedagogy, choral literature, and choral-rehearsal techniques.
Teaching Interests
I love conducting choirs and teaching the art of conducting. As a live-long choral musician I know what an amazing experience it can be to sing with others as one voice. I look forward to continuing and growing the choral tradition of Eureka College. As a teacher of conducting, I look to inspire my students to unite their musical training and leadership experience toward the goal of unifying their ensemble as one voice.
Professional Activity
Besides conducting Chorale and Chamber Singers at Eureka, I also conduct the Downers Grove Choral Society (DGCS) and serve as the Paster of Music and Worship at Church of the Savior (Anglican). In 2025, I was invited to lead singers from DGCS on a concert tour to Vienna and Salzburg where I conducted them in performances of Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore and other works. In recognition of artistic excellence, the Downers Grove Choral Society was selected as a 2024 National Finalist for the American Prize in Choral Performance-Community Division. I also conducted the Carnegie Hall premiere of Zelenka’s Miserere in C Minor. Recent performance highlights include the Choral Society’s 65th anniversary performance of Handel’s Messiah, Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, and Powell’s The Cry of Jeremiah. From 2018-2025 I was also the Artistic Director of the Naperville Men’s Glee Club. In the past, I have taught music history, conducting, and choral methods at Wheaton College and North Central College. I also have experience teaching music, k-12, in a public-school setting. I am a member of the American Choral Director’s Association, Chorus America, and the Illinois Music Education Association.
Uniquely Eureka
As a new member of the faculty, I look forward to growing the choral music program at Eureka and providing a place for all to be a part of choir. Eureka sings!
