Eureka College Media Stations Earn Top Honors at Illinois Broadcasters Association Conference
Eureka, IL – Eureka College’s radio and television stations have been recognized among the top college media outlets in Illinois at the annual Illinois Broadcasters Association (IBA) Conference. The college secured two first-place awards in the highly competitive Student Silver Dome Awards, underscoring the strength of Eureka’s Communication and Media Studies program.
Eureka College claimed first place in the categories of Best Radio/TV Sports Play-by-Play and Best TV Commercial. The play-by-play win, featuring highlights from the Red Devils vs. Greenville men’s basketball broadcast on February 14, 2024, featuring Spencer Davis, a 2024 graduate, and Kareem Burnett, a current Communication and Media Studies major.
ECTV also swept the Best TV Commercial category, taking both first and second place with entries produced by Davis during the 2023-2024 academic year.
Named after the iconic dome of the Illinois State Capitol, the Silver Dome Awards recognize the “Best of the Best” in Illinois broadcasting, celebrating both commercial and student broadcasters. This year, Eureka College stood proudly alongside other first-place winners, including Illinois State University, North Central College, Lake Land College, Eastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University, College of DuPage, Loyola University, and Governors State University.
“I am proud that our program at Eureka College stands shoulder to shoulder with much larger institutions in Illinois,” said Dr. John Malone, Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies and General Manager of WXEC FM/ECTV. “Spencer graduated in 2024, and Kareem is still here creating great content. I was pleased to have eight other students in attendance at the conference this year, most of them new Eureka students. When they see their peers’ winning awards, they get motivated to compete. Afterwards, they brainstormed all afternoon on what content they can create for next year’s competition. The baton is being passed to the next wave of great Eureka radio and television creators.”
Eight Eureka students, Andrew Schulte, Kareem Burnett, Jaden Randall, Liv Hardin-Nieri, Andrew Danehl, Matthew Swan, Ella Walker and Aaron Cabrera attended the IBA conference, where they participated in panel discussions with students from other institutions. The awards were presented during a luncheon, which also honored industry professionals with lifetime achievement awards.
