Student Spotlight: Destiny S. Evans
Pursuing a Passion for Art Therapy
We are thrilled to shine the Student Spotlight on Destiny S. Evans, a senior art major with a minor in psychology!
Destiny transferred to Eureka College in her junior year from Spoon River College, drawn to the small campus atmosphere and the strong sense of community between faculty and students. Building meaningful connections with her professors has been an essential part of her academic journey, and she has found that support system here at Eureka.
Pursuing a Passion for Art Therapy
Set to graduate in May, Destiny plans to continue her education by pursuing a master’s degree in art therapy—a passion sparked by a professor at her previous college. With her love for both art and mental health advocacy, art therapy was the perfect path for her.
Destiny is a recipient of the Edna Mary Brown Endowed Scholarship (2024) and a proud member of the International Honor Society in Psychology (2024). On campus, she stays actively involved as an assistant for the art department, a desk worker in the Office of Student Life, and a resident assistant (RA).
Finding Her Creative Space
Her favorite place on campus is the ceramics room, a peaceful retreat where she can relax and create. She also loves spending time in the art rooms, describing them as spaces where she truly feels she belongs. One of her most memorable classes was Illustration for Literary Marketing, where she collaborated with classmates to create a coloring book and even developed her own comic book!
Creativity Beyond the Classroom
Outside of class, Destiny enjoys gaming, scrapbooking, creating art, and listening to music. She has even started a small plant society in her dorm, adding a touch of greenery to campus life.
A Proud Artistic Achievement
One of her proudest moments at Eureka was hosting her art exhibition in Fall 2023, themed "Plants Taking Back Spaces and Overgrowth." In her own words, “My portfolio explores the idea of plants reclaiming spaces that humans have overtaken.” (Evans, art exhibit statement). She deeply appreciated the encouragement and support from her art professors throughout the experience.
