Jenny Bursell
Assistant Professor, Criminal Justice
Biography
With more than 20 years of experience in the criminal justice field, I bring both professional and teaching expertise to the classroom. Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member, I worked with McLean County Court Services in juvenile detention and adult probation while also serving as an adjunct instructor at several colleges. These experiences shaped my passion for mentoring students who are interested in making a difference through careers in criminal justice.
Research & Teaching Interests
While I do not conduct original research, I stay current on the latest developments in the field—particularly in corrections, both community-based and institutional. I also closely follow changes in Illinois law and their impact on practice. My favorite course to teach is Juvenile Justice and Delinquency, as it allows me to share both academic knowledge and real-world insights with students.
Professional Activity
In addition to teaching, I hold a Certificate in Paralegal Studies and continue to work part-time in juvenile detention. I also teach at other colleges, allowing me to remain connected to diverse student populations and perspectives.
Community Engagement
I am deeply committed to serving my community. Each February, I participate in the “Night in a Car” fundraiser to raise awareness and support for the homeless community in Bloomington/Normal. I have also volunteered with organizations such as Toys for Tots and Special Olympics.
Outside the Classroom
When I’m not teaching or working, I enjoy spending time with my niece and nephews, reading, and caring for my two cockatiels.
