Eureka College and the Importance of a Liberal Arts Education
https://www.eureka.edu/blog/article/eureka-college-and-the-importance-of-a-liberal-arts-education

... United States. Ronald Reagan epitomizes the value of the liberal arts. Throughout his lifetime, he appreciated the education he received at Eureka College. He felt that it prepared him well for his life’s adventures.  For all of us, it is important that not all of our leaders come from elite institutions. For if that happens, opportunity for most of us will cease to exist. Not everyone can go to Harvard or Yale or Stanford, nor should they. That is why the education at liberal arts colleges is so important. It offers a wide range of students the opportunity to become the best versions of themselves. It teaches them resourcefulness, perseverance and resiliency that has proven to serve not only them but our society well. When Reagan served as President his cabinet members were graduates of Yale (George Bush), Stanford (Casper Weinberger), Princeton (George Schultz and James Baker) as well as other prestigious and

Even when the threads get tangled, when other threads come and go, and even when it feels like there’s nothing left to unwind—keep pulling.” Wicks closed by reminding students that while their time at Eureka is limited, the choices they make will shape their experience into something meaningful. “It is my hope that our threads cross, and I look forward to welcoming each of you.”   Opening Convocation

Now, as Eureka College celebrates its 171st birthday, coincidentally Cahill’s own birthday, he reflected on why the institution remains deeply meaningful to him and offered practical advice to today’s students.   Below is a condensed version of Cahill’s speech during the ceremony.   A Lifelong Connection Cahill’s connection to Eureka began long before he enrolled. From childhood swimming lessons in the Reagan Center to family ties spanning three generations, Eureka was woven into his story. Still, he once questioned whether the small college could help him achieve big ambitions. That changed after meeting the late Paul Lister, whose mentorship and belief in Eureka’s pillars of learning, service, and leadership helped shape Cahill’s path.   “Paul guided students to see the worth in themselves,” Cahill said, noting the profound influence Lister had on countless young people.   The Value of a Liberal Arts Education Cahill emphasized that liberal arts education is not simply about memorizing facts —

Our situation is exacerbated by the reality that Illinois is a significant net exporter of students. Despite factors like these that are beyond our control, we still welcomed one of the largest entering classes on record in fall 2022 and followed that up with a solid recruitment year in fall 2023. The two ways to grow enrollment are to recruit more students to campus and then increase the retention rate of those who have chosen EC for their education. We are investing substantial resources in both of these areas. One of the anchors of our enrollment plan is a more robust strategy to recruit out-of-state students
