Eureka College was founded by abolitionists from Kentucky who were members of a religious movement known as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and were committed to providing young people a broad, liberal education. These pioneers believed in an education infused with values as a basis for leadership. Chartered by the Illinois Legislature in 1855, Eureka was the first college in the state and third in the nation to admit men and women on an equal basis. Eureka College was designated by the National Park Service as a Campus Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places in June 2010.

Vow Renewal Ceremony at Homecoming 2023

As of 2023, there are over 525 alumni couples United@Eureka! To celebrate all the love that began 'neath the elms, Board Chair and Eureka College alumnus Beau Underwood '06, will officiate a vow renewal ceremony, which will be held Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 2:00 pm on the lawn outside the Chapel.

Eureka couples who register in advance will receive a vow renewal certificate signed by Underwood, a commemorative gift, and a digital copy of a professional portrait taken inside the Chapel. A small reception will follow the ceremony on the lawn.
